Dreams vs. Astral Travel: How to Tell the Difference
By Allie Theiss, MSc, CSC, ABS
Energy Worker, Psychic, & Soul Connection Guide
Have you ever woken up from a vivid experience and thought:
“That wasn’t just a dream. I was somewhere else.”
You’re not imagining things.
In the metaphysical world, not all sleep experiences are created equal. Some dreams are symbolic, sure—but others are journeys. Portals. Soul visits. Glimpses into other lives, timelines, or dimensions.
Today, we’re diving into how to tell the difference between a dream, a lucid dream, and astral travel—so you can better navigate your night journeys.
What’s a Dream (Energetically Speaking)?
Dreams are real experiences—just not always in this dimension.
While some dreams help process daily life or emotional energy, others are far more than just “mental recycling.” You may be:
-
Visiting past lives or future timelines.
-
Meeting with soulmates, guides, or ancestors.
-
Exploring parallel realities.
-
Downloading information through symbols or metaphors.
Signs You Had a Multi-Dimensional Dream:
-
You wake up emotionally affected—joyful, heartbroken, energized.
-
The places and people feel familiar, even if unrecognizable.
-
Time flows differently or isn’t linear.
-
You sense you “returned” from somewhere rather than “waking up.”
-
The dream stays with you for days, months, or even years.
Dreams are your soul’s way of traveling through realms while your body rests.
What Is Lucid Dreaming?
Lucid dreaming is the conscious version of dreaming. It happens when you realize you’re dreaming while still inside the dream, and begin co-creating the experience.
In a lucid dream, you might:
-
Fly, teleport, or shape-shift.
-
Ask questions and receive clear answers.
-
Practice manifesting or healing.
-
Explore dream environments with intention.
It’s a training ground for intuitive expansion and self-mastery.
But unlike astral travel, you’re still operating within the dream space, not projecting outward into the astral plane.
What Is Astral Travel?
Astral travel (also known as astral projection) occurs when your consciousness fully separates from your physical body and navigates through the astral realms.
These journeys are not dreams. They are distinct, purposeful soul travels into:
-
The astral plane or spirit world.
-
Non-physical dimensions.
-
Energetic templates of Earth or other worlds.
-
Healing chambers, libraries, or akashic records.
Signs You Were Astral Traveling:
-
You felt a separation or “lift-off” from your body (often accompanied by vibrations, buzzing, or floating).
-
You were aware and conscious outside your body.
-
The environment was hyper-real, stable, and rich in detail.
-
You encountered non-human guides or beings.
-
You brought back clear teachings or energetic shifts.
Why They Overlap (And Confuse Us)
You can shift from a dream to an astral journey – or start lucid and accidentally slip into the astral. The veil is thin between states.
Here’s how they differ:
| Type | You Are… | Domain Accessed |
|---|---|---|
| Dreaming | In your soul state | Realms, timelines, spirit spaces |
| Lucid Dream | Aware you’re dreaming and in control | Subconscious, time travel, or alternate realms |
| Astral Travel | Fully conscious & outside the body | Astral plane, time, travel, energetic dimensions |
Tips to Know Which One You Had
-
Ask yourself: Did I observe, interact, or journey?
-
Check your recall: Astral travel often returns with crystal clarity.
-
Track emotions: Dreams carry resonance. Astral leaves energetic imprints.
-
Use intention: “Tonight, I want to astral travel. I ask to return with memory and clarity.”
