* Topic: Creating Your Day with Intention
This idea that our lives are more significantly shaped by our reactions rather than the events themselves is a cornerstone of many philosophies and cognitive psychology. It emphasizes that we have the power to choose our responses, our attitudes, and the energy we bring to any situation. This is where the power of intentions comes in.
Think of intentions as the inner script we create for ourselves. This script is not written for us by external events, but we choose it. It’s a narrative that helps us interpret our experiences, helps us decide how we will respond, and helps shape our emotions and behavior in the face of life’s ups and downs. By setting a purposeful intention, we can significantly influence our day, sculpting it in alignment with our deepest values, hopes, and aspirations.
For example, if you set an intention to maintain a positive attitude, this intention acts as a beacon, guiding your responses throughout the day. Even when faced with challenges, you’ll be more likely to find the silver lining to respond with optimism because you’ve set that intention.
6 steps to creating your day with intention:
- Morning Grounding: Before you rush into the day, take a few moments yourself. Settle into a quiet space, breathe deeply, and ground yourself. You might do this with tea or coffee in your garden, on your yoga mat, or even snuggled in bed. This is a sacred time to set the energy for your day.
- Cultivate Gratitude: Cultivate a sense of gratitude from this space of stillness. Gratitude has the power to shift our focus from what’s missing in our lives to the abundance that’s already present. Research by Dr. Robert A. Emmons of the University of California has shown that practicing gratitude can lead to higher positive emotions, such as joy, love, and optimism.
- Set Your Intention: Reflect on how you want your day to unfold. This isn’t about specific tasks or goals you want to accomplish but more about the energy, mindset, or emotional state you want to embody. Your intention could be anything from wanting to stay mindful, being open-hearted in your interactions, and handling challenges with resilience.
- Visualize and Affirm: Once you’ve set your intention, close your eyes and visualize yourself moving through your day with this intention at the heart of all you do. See it, feel it, embody it. Then, create a simple, positive affirmation that encapsulates your intention. For example, if your intention is patience, your affirmation could be, “Today, I embody patience in all my interactions.” Repeat this affirmation to yourself, believing and embracing its truth.
- Carry Your Intention With You: As you move through your day, recall your intention frequently. You can even set reminders on your phone to pause, breathe, and reconnect with your intention.
- Evening Reflection: At the end of the day, take some time to reflect on how your intention shaped your experiences. Were there moments you felt truly aligned with your intention? Were there moments it was challenging to uphold your intention? What can you learn from these experiences? Reflection encourages personal growth and can strengthen your practice of living with intention.
Living with intention is about creating an active rather than a passive existence. It’s about reclaiming our power, about choosing our path rather than being carried along by life’s currents. It’s about not just letting our days happen to us, but shaping them, crafting them with our hands, and aligning with our heart’s desires.
